Demonstration : Robin

STAGE 1: I liked the action in this pose, the tilt of the head. I think this gives an immediacy to the picture, almost as if he's in conversation.

STAGE 2: Using a 3/4in brush I blocked in quickly. Here the dark background behind the right side of Robin's head helped to describe the shape of his hair and ear. This image alreay conveys a lot, but in hindsight I could have done less and kept more of the freshness of the first few minutes.

FINISHED PAINTING:Robin, watercolour 28X20in.(71X51cm).

I worked more washes over the initial stages, layer on layer, to reach the final portrait.
